Poker Run

[ Objective | Re-Cap ]

OBJECTIVE:
This month's event will be a Poker Run with a $30,000 limit on vehicle designs (cars or motorcycles only). We will be setting up an arena using the toy blocks from the church that we used at a previous event. The arena will have five archways placed within it. Each time a vehicle passes beneath an arch, the player controlling the vehicle will get one card from a standard deck of cards; however, each player can only get one card per arch. You can also gain cards by killing other vehicles. If you kill another vehicle (must be a full kill), you get any cards that the controlling player had accumulated up to that point. There will be a 20 turn limit, and the person with the best poker hand out of five cards at the end will be declared the winner.

RE-CAP:
January's Poker Run event actually turned into a "Don't get poked" event thanks to an oversight that did not ban dropped weapons for the event. Ralph and Curt monopolized on this oversight, with Curt mounting dual explosive spike droppers and Ralph mounting a Napalm mine dropper. They planned to use the droppers to clog the archways that had to be crossed to gain the winning poker cards.

The arena (built from children's building blocks) was rectangular with six entrances. The center of the arena featured the five archways that needed to be crossed to pick up poker cards.

Six competitors lined up at each of the arena entrances to start the mayhem:

  • Kelly Robertson - Lime Green Vette
  • Michael Kelly - Blue Chevy
  • Curt Collins - White
  • Marty Miller - Red Station Wagon
  • Ralph McConnell - Yellow Convertible
  • Jim Robertson - Black Lambourghini

As the combatants accelerated into the arena, the archways quickly became congested crossroads. The duelists tried their best to get through each archway to pick up a card before Curt or Ralph clogged them with spikes. Kelly was the first victim of the spikes... Curt, Jim, and Kelly had all met at the Northwest archway at about the same time. After being rammed by Jim, Kelly was forced into some spikes that Curt had left in the archway. This combination left her barely in control of her vechicle, and she was unable to pull through a turn out of the arch. Her car went rolling into the arena wall and ended up resting on its roof. Being close to an arena exit, Kelly attempted to exit her vehicle and escape the arena with the few cards she had collected. Michael would have none of it... seeing a vulnerable ped with cards in hand, he turned Kelly's driver into a dark splotch on the arena floor.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the arena, Ralph and Marty traded fire. Unfortunately for Marty, Ralph was really using fire, and Marty's car design lacked a fire extinguisher. The flames would hamper Marty for the rest of the event, and he was unable to effectively penetrate Ralph's metal armor. Marty eventually fled the arena with Michael hot on his tail. Michael wasn't able to catch Marty in time, and was able to escape however.

Curt was also to fall victim to Ralph's fire bug. Committed to picking up more poker cards, Curt wrecklessly plowed through the string of mines that Ralph had left through the Northeast archway. The resulting explosions seriously damaged Curt's tires, and subsequently set his car on fire. The precarious state of Curt's tires, and his lack of an extinguisher forced Curt to flee through the East gate with the few cards he had in hand.

This left Ralph, Michael, and Jim in the arena. Michael and Ralph traded fire while Jim's ram car circled the arena picking up cards and trying to get into a position to ram one of the remaining competitors. Michael managed to shoot out two of Ralph's tires and brought him to a grinding halt, but he was severly damaged in the altercation and was forced to flee the arena. With Ralph's car disabled, he exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Unfortunately, the car was stopped near the center of the arena, and there was a long gauntlet to run before he could exit. Much to Ralph's dismay, Jim's ram car was easily able to get into position to turn Ralph's driver into a speed bump. Rather than play it all out, Ralph surrendered his three cards to Jim. Combining his three cards with Ralph's three cards, Jim was able to put together a winning hand that consisted of a pair of 8's.
