Speed Kills

RE-CAP:
November's event featured a high speed shoot-out between 5 vehicles. Each driver was behind the wheel of an identical Indy car equipped with a VMG in a turret, an MD rear, and HC and acceleration that would impress even Mario Andretti. The scenario gave points for completing laps, for maintaining speeds over 100 and 150 mph, and, of course, kills. The five drivers were started in a line, and starting positions were chosen randomly. No fire or dropped weapons were permitted for the first lap. The arena was a simple, nearly circular arena. Concrete pylons were placed in the center of each of the four straight aways just to make things interesting. Our players and their micro-machine cars included:

  • Lon Coontz - Yellow Hot Rod
  • Don McCalmon - Purple Indy Car
  • Steve Caldwell - Red Station Wagon
  • Jim Robertson - Black Lambourghini
  • Dan McNair - White Porche

Lon "Leadfoot" Coontz started out the race with an early lead, jumping out to the front of the pack thanks to guts and a good pole position.

The first lap went by without much incident, but the eagerness of the drivers to mix things up was apparent as they crossed the finish line to start lap 2. Lon was conservative with his ammo, but Jim "Fahrvergnugen" Robertson, hot on Lon's heels, immediately put his mines on automatic... littering turn one with half a dozen mines. The remaining combatants began exchanging VMG fire as they entered turn one. This fire continued through turn two and into turn three.

By this time speeds were upward of 100 mph, and Steve "Viva La France" Caldwell's barrage proved fatal. Coming into turn three, Steve's VMG fire penetrated Dan "Wall Kisser" McNair's side armor and continued relentlessy through his driver. Dan's beautiful white Porche spun out of control and eventually disintegrated against the wall of turn 3.

As the race continued around to the finish line again, Lon was able to negotiate the enemy mines and continue on through turn 1 again. Unfortunately Jim was not so lucky. While trying to squeeze past his own mines, they detonated, but luckily his armor protected him. He wasn't so lucky when he tried to sneak past some of Don "I have mines and I'm not afraid to use them" McCalmon's however. The second minfield was too much for the lightly armored underside of the indy car, and the explosives penetrated the bottom armor and killed Jim's driver. Don was obviously quite proud of his mines :)

Don quickly forgot about his first kill as he closed in on his second victim. Falling in behind Steve, Don quickly shredded his rear armor and destroyed Steve's gas tank. The volatile gas erupted into flames and in a desperate attempt to stop, Steve locked up his brakes and sent his car spinning into one of the center pylons. Steve's driver, Reynald LaForce was killed instantly. He will be missed.

Don's luck finally runs out as Jim's driver reaches out from the grave to return the favor... Don hits one of Jim's mines which breach his underside and hit the engine. The explosion hits Don's transmission and renders his car incapable of accelerating. Don is forced to stop, but since he still has an operational weapon with a 360 degree arc of fire, he is not yet considered killed. Lon soon approaches and Don is forced to surrender.
